The integral Mercedes-Benz safety philosophy comes one step closer to the vision of accident-free driving. It divides automotive safety into four phases:

In the first phase, "Safe driving", functions like ESP® in the GL provide for the safest driving possible. ESP® can help you handle critical situations by decelerating individual wheels as required and adjusting the engine torque.

The optional COMAND APS multimedia system control and display system makes the driver’s job easier by minimising the distractions from traffic as much as possible.

In the second phase, "In the event of danger", the standard-fit PRE-SAFE® functions take effect. Depending on the situation and vehicle equipment, the sliding sunroof and the side windows close automatically and the front seat belts are pulled taut. If the vehicle is also equipped with the memory package, the front-passenger seat can be automatically moved into a better position for the impending collision.

In the third phase, "In the event of an accident", comprehensive passive safety systems come into play. Inside the GL, airbags help to protect the driver and front passenger from injury. Sidebags und windowbags complete this protection. Automatic child seat recognition is available as an optional extra (for special Mercedes-Benz child seats with integral transponder) for the front passenger seat.

In the fourth phase, "After an accident", additional measures may be taken which make it easier to rescue vehicle occupants.
